The New Food Waste Requirements
To enhance environmental sustainability, the UK government is rolling out new waste legislation, effective 31 March 2025. As a result, all workplaces in England with 10 or more employees, must separate waste into specific categories to improve recycling efficiency.
Under the updated regulations, businesses will now need to separate waste into the following categories:
- Dry Recyclables – This includes plastics, metals, glass, paper, and cardboard, which must be collected separately from other waste.
- Food Waste – All food scraps and preparation waste must be disposed of separately to avoid contaminating recyclables.
- Black Bin Waste (Residual Waste) – This refers to non-recyclable waste that does not fit into the above categories.
Additionally, while paper and cardboard need to be kept apart from other dry recyclables, some waste collectors may allow them to be collected together. Therefore, it’s important to check with your waste provider to ensure compliance.
Micro-Firm Exemption
For smaller businesses, there is good news. Companies with fewer than 10 full-time employees will have until 31 March 2027 to comply. This extension gives them more time to adjust and implement the necessary changes.
Steps to Stay Compliant
To ensure a smooth transition, businesses should take the following steps:
- Review Current Waste Practices – First, evaluate your existing waste disposal methods and identify any changes needed to meet the new standards.
- Coordinate with Waste Collectors – Next, speak with your waste provider to confirm the proper collection of recyclables, food waste, and residual waste.
- Set Up Waste Stations – Then, introduce designated bins and clear signage to encourage employees to separate waste correctly.
- Train Employees – In addition, educate staff about waste segregation and why these regulations matter.
- Monitor & Improve – Finally, regularly review your waste management strategy to ensure ongoing compliance and identify areas for improvement.
